The prairie stretches out before me, an endless sea of grass punctuated only by the dark haunches of grazing bison. Above them, bright and beautiful, the cloud-kissed sky bleeds into oblivion. I am inspired, but something crackles uncomfortable in the back of my brain. I live in the city, with buildings blocking my view at every turn. Before that, I lived in the forest where trees stopped my eyes. I have seen big skies before, but they were given context by the flat horizon of various great lakes. Now though, before this prairie expanse, nothing really seems to end at the horizon. Instead it wraps itself around the earth, reaching out into the void. I feel small, put in my place.
