Each summer a family of barred owls raised their young in the woods surrounding my childhood home. They would have two or three babies each year who would grow up with us. In my youth, I was surrounded by trees and all the creatures inhabiting their shelter. As such, I had become accustomed to the concept that I was never quite alone. Still, the owls and their owlets where seemingly ever-present. Their eyes watching us with both curiosity and, perhaps, a bit of predatory lust. I imagined them, like my cats, wishing they were just a bit larger and we were just a bit smaller! Yet, even with that feeling of always being watched, they were a part of our family as much as we were a part of theirs.

This woodcut was inspired by an image my dad took this past summer of this year’s fledged young owls. While I know their parents cannot possibly be the same owls I grew up with, I like to think they are their descendants… my owl family!
