Framed or Unframed?

The intricate and precise pattern of holes on the birch tree depicted in Between were created by a sapsucker looking for, as its name indicates, the sweet sap of the tree. But his frenetic effort created many future shelters for insects and fungi on a tree that was already at the end of its life. Sometimes shelter comes at a cost.
