On the Horizon

“On the Horizon” seeks to investigate the wilderness oases we have designed into our urban environments and what their futures might hold. Rice Creek, a metropolitan tributary to the Mississippi River, not only sustains the life on its banks and uplands, but also acts as a guide for birds and other migrating wildlife through a treacherous maze of metal, glass and asphalt. The bold colors and crisp lines of the reduction woodcut graphically affirm a representation of the landscape as it is. Gold finches flit and sing while yellow coneflowers bob their lazy heads in the breeze. The creek meanders past, its babbling flow a perceived constant in an ever-changing system. The collagraph, however, is employed to create a sense of temporal ephemera, asking “What is to come?” As the city pulses with continued growth and pushes against the remaining green, the artist wonders what will guide the birds? What will cleanse the land? What will nourish us?
