It was late August: hot and sticky. Crouched in my garden, my hands were stained a deep purple by the aronia berries cascading into my harvesting basket. A silent shadow passed overhead jarring me from my focus. I looked up to see a flash of orange and black. Abandoning my task, I followed the fluttering queen to a meadow blazing star flower spike. She was not alone; other monarchs had congregated on their favorite nectar-rich, high-summer forage. I had seen this before. It was one of the reasons I grew liatris. In that moment though, the colors were a portal to some otherworldly realm where flower and butterfly transmuted into fire and frenzy. Oranges flickered frenetically, lapping up the sun made purple. A hundred tiny explosions burst into violet and orange: white sparks on black coals. I knew then, I could not keep this tiny prairie fire to myself.
